Hi, I’m Cole Privitere, a Sales Representative at Spearhead. I recently had the chance to sit down with Spearhead’s founder and Managing Director, Doug Bryson, for an insightful conversation about the company, his career journey, and more. Excited to share our discussion with you—hope you enjoy!
Cole: Can you share the story behind starting your business? What inspired you?
Doug: I spent the first 15 years of my career in the IT space and learned the ins and outs of the industry. Entrepreneurship is something that has run in my family, and is something that I always knew that I eventually wanted to do. Around 2009, I came across an opportunity to launch a business on the staffing side of the industry. Because of making the transition from IT to Staffing, I felt that just about any problem or project that a client might have, I had either dealt with either it or something very similar, which I think is one of the aspects that makes Spearhead unique.
Cole: How do you think the industry has changed since you started in 2010, and how do you adapt?
Doug: The constant evolution of technology has been the most consistent change. It’s something that impacts every industry, but it’s especially important for us. Staying on our toes in shifting trends is vital, so we’re constantly researching, reading, and talking to subject matter experts to ensure we are up to date. We pride ourselves on our expertise in filling roles that often have very specific needs, so for us it is critical that we always understand a client’s specific environment in order for us to provide them with the best possible staffing solutions.
Cole: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the same industry?
Doug: It was Mark Cuban who said “the one thing we can all control is effort”. I honestly feel like it applies to just about everything in life, but especially in business. I think success, for recruiting at least, is heavily correlated with how much of a drive and how much persistence you have to achieve your goals. At the end of the day, you are competing. That’s what makes the work challenging, but also fun if you can develop the right mindset.
Cole: What do you envision for the future of Spearhead?
Doug: I’ve enjoyed running the business the last 15 years and am happy I’ve been able to scale the company and develop great relationships with our clients. My role has changed more recently where I get to spend more time on building the strategy and business structure alongside account and operations management. But more so it’s really about giving support to our up and coming group of recruiters and account managers that we have now, so that we can hopefully have another successful 15 years.
