Responsible for all planned and unplanned maintenance on all plant manufacturing equipment. Also includes all plant indirect non-manufacturing facility and all other equipment, not directly involved in production through preventive and unplanned maintenance. Oversee property exterior and ensure it is well maintained.
Direct supervision of the Maintenance staff. Provide direction to all direct reports daily to assure the maximum labor efficiency to get all jobs completed within the established timeframe, keeping overtime to a minimum.
Participating in interviewing, hiring, terminations, employee relations, employee retention and advises management on personnel matters.
Oversee employees to make certain employees are performing the job duties listed on their job description and using the correct tools for the job.
Coordinate and complete employee reviews on time.
Develops, trains, and coaches’ staff. Cross train employees to ensure staff can fill in or back up when needed.
Ensures employees are following critical procedures as written.
Participate in training machine operators using a translator if needed, to assure operators fully understand how to operate the equipment.
Daily meeting with the maintenance staff to discuss / review daily maintenance schedule, breakdowns, and issues.
Distribute assignments to staff which include timeframes for completion.
Daily interface with Sanitation Manager.
Schedule weekly meeting with Owner, General Manager, and Operations Manager to discuss new projects, project status updates and anticipated completion times.
Duties / Responsibilities
Provide safe and reliable technical support to the food manufacturing process. This includes strict adherence to OSHA and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) policies and requirements. These include but are not limited to; Lock out Tag Out (LOTO), ladder safety and fall protection, confined spaces, use and storage of hazardous materials, OSHA National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA) guidelines, National Electrical Codes (NEC), etc.
Responsibility for all building utilities such as heat, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical and plant alarm system.
Evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair equipment issues as required. Perform root cause analysis and engineering changes to prevent re-occurrences, enhance performance and food safety.
Review and schedule maintenance requests. Immediate response and support to production breakdowns on all equipment coordinated with QA.
Develop a plan for preventive equipment maintenance (PM) for each piece of equipment. Properly document.
Review, screen and approve vendors and contractors. Review and renew all maintenance contracts. Keep an updated contractor list.
Manage, order, organize, document, and have accurate inventory of tools and spare parts.
Participate in evaluating and recommending new equipment.
Evaluate current processes and suggest, when appropriate, better layouts or different equipment to achieve greater efficiency in production or utilities usage.
Oversee that the property exterior is well maintained by outside contractors.
Responsible for flag integrity and flag protocol.
Maintain all maintenance required documentation required for SQF, FDA, and USDA.
Off hours response to all plant issues that may arise 24 hours / 7 days per week.
Food Safety Responsibilities
Assures that a food safe environment exists in maintenance work areas through the proper adherence to the related SQF procedures and the proper record, and document completion after the completion of the maintenance.
Accurate notification of start and completion times relative to planned and unplanned maintenance.
Contractor approvals for all necessary incoming contractors into the Don’s facility. This is to include a GMP training class.
Tool accountability program ensuring no lost tools before completion of jobs.
Management of brittle plastics program with Sanitation Manager thus eliminating all glass or plastic material that is not shatterproof throughout the production facility.
Proper storage of various non-food contacts solvents and liquids within the plant. Maintain list.
Keep Purchasing Manager updated on any changes to the MRO list and Approved Contractor list, so registers are kept up to date.
Auditing the facility to assure it is maintained to support food safety requirements and is always in audit ready condition.
Work with Sanitation Manager to assure we have Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on every item on the chemical and MRO list.
Competencies / Skills / Abilities
Requires a deep understanding of how machines and systems work, and how to keep them running.
Ability to read, write, and interpret blueprints, and machine manuals.
In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, phone systems, and alarms.
Ability to understand the operation of the machine to troubleshoot and identify machine problems.
Ability to schedule and manage preventative maintenance on all machinery.
Knowledge of the proper tools to use to fix equipment. Ability to research for the best current available parts to replace long lead time, outdated or obsolete parts for the best price.
Ability to perform, count and understand basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication) use a calculator and be able to read a ruler.
Strictly abide by safety regulations during manufacturing activities, keeping equipment in check to avoid mechanical hazards.
Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and NEC regulations and guidelines.
Ability to interact with vendors, contractors, equipment suppliers to continue to build strong working relations and parts availability.
Excellent managerial and supervisory skills.
Knowledge of principles and methods for training and teaching staff.
Knowledge of food safety requirements.
Strive to improve knowledge of new best practices or new innovations in the field.
Must be able to work in a rapidly changing work environment. Must be able to adapt to changes manage competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
